The First Steps to Stop Panic Attacks
When a person is overwhelmed due to a panic attack, it more than often feels as though nothing can be done to help stop or even relieve the symptoms. Even though your panic or anxiety may seem overwhelming, there are steps to stop a panic attack that you can use. Even if you could not get rid of the attacks completely, wouldn’t it be nice to make the attacks less extreme. There are many things that can trigger a panic attack. There are times that the attacks are caused by unsettled matters from your past. There are also time when the attacks are the result of a recent traumatic or extremely stressful event. For other people still, it can be caused by a lack of coping skills to handle the stress of life. If a person is able to identify the root causes of the panic attacks, he/she usually has less attacks and is able to get back to their normal life. Panic attacks can become severe and develop into an problem called agoraphobia, a fear of leaving the house, if not addressed properly.
Time To Take Precautions
The first step into eliminating panic attacks is to recognize what triggers them to begin with. These triggers can be a certain person, animal, situation, or even an issue that needs to be confronted. After you are able to identify what your trigger or triggers are, you can move on to the next step for stopping your panic attacks.
People who have help with panic attacks will normally experience more than one and can usually recognize the symptoms that show up following the beginning of an attack. Knowing this, a person is more likely to be able to help talk themselves through a panic attack in order to calm themselves down. Upon a panic attack, using the self talk method, a person can add a comment to tell themselves they have gone through this before and survived, and can do it again. Deep breathing also works well by taking slow, deep breathes from the diaphragm, it will also help one to clam down during a panic attack.
On top of these steps to stop a panic attack, there are many other preventive methods people can use when an attack begins, or already has begun. Most people who suffer from panic attacks will be hard on themselves. Many times they place the blame of the attack on themselves, and/or feel they have some kind of defect.
For these people, they need to know panic attacks are out of their control and they should have a better outlook on themselves. They need to have realistic expectations for stopping panic attacks, and to reduce them by reducing the situations that cause them. Smoking, drinking alcohol, and caffeine should be eliminated or significantly reduced because they also can trigger panic attacks.
